📜 History

The original Shamrock Shake was introduced by McDonald's in 1970 as a seasonal St. Patrick's Day treat — a vanilla milkshake flavored with mint syrup and dyed green. It became a cult favorite, appearing every year in the weeks before March 17th. The boozy adult version swaps the mint syrup for crème de menthe and adds vanilla vodka and Irish cream liqueur to transform the nostalgic shake into a frozen cocktail. Multiple cocktail writers popularized this riff in the 2010s, and it has become one of the most searched St. Patrick's Day drink recipes on social media ahead of the holiday.
