History & Origin

The Broken Down Golf Cart is a 1990s novelty shot whose name has no documented origin story — one of many quirky, evocative bar drink names from that era where the title was often chosen for its amusement value rather than any literal reference to the ingredients. What the drink does have is a straightforward and genuinely appealing flavor: the combination of Midori melon liqueur, amaretto, and cranberry juice produces a bright, sweet-tart, fruit-forward shot with good color. Midori was introduced to the American market in 1978 at a launch party held at Studio 54 in New York City by the Japanese spirits company Suntory, and its distinctive neon green color and candied honeydew melon flavor made it immediately distinctive. The name Midori means green in Japanese. Its debut coincided with the disco era's appetite for colorful, sweet, visually striking cocktails, and the liqueur went on to become a cocktail bar staple throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s. Amaretto, the almond-flavored Italian liqueur produced in the Saronno region since the early 16th century according to some accounts, contributes a complementary nut-and-fruit sweetness that deepens the melon without clashing with it. Cranberry juice adds tartness and a pink-red color that shifts the overall shade from lime green toward something more coral, making the visual presentation as appealing as the flavor.
