The Espresso Martini was created in 1983 by Dick Bradsell at the Soho Brasserie in London, inspired by a model who asked for something to simultaneously wake her up and prepare her for an evening out. Bradsell combined a fresh espresso shot with Kahlua, sugar syrup, and vodka. He called it the Vodka Espresso initially. The drink was refined at Fred's Club and The Pharmacy bar during London's cocktail renaissance, taking the Espresso Martini name as the martini format dominated 1990s bar culture. Dick Bradsell became one of the most celebrated British bartenders of his generation, credited with multiple modern classics including the Bramble. The espresso martini experienced a remarkable global resurgence beginning around 2018, becoming one of the most ordered cocktails worldwide by 2022 — a second life few cocktails achieve.
