History & Origin

Irish Orange is a simple two-element cocktail that highlights one of Irish whiskey's most characteristic natural flavor notes — the crisp, fresh fruit character, particularly apple and citrus, that Irish pot still expressions carry from their unique grain mash. Irish pot still whiskey is produced from a mash containing both malted and unmalted barley, a production method unique to Ireland that developed partly from historical taxation pressures in the 18th and 19th centuries when malted grain was taxed and distillers added unmalted grain to reduce their tax burden. The unmalted barley contributes specific flavor compounds — including certain esters and organic acids — that produce the characteristic spicy, fruity quality that whiskey connoisseurs call the Irish pot still character. This natural fruit note makes fresh orange juice a more complementary pairing with Irish whiskey than it would be with heavily peated Scotch or caramel-forward bourbon. As Irish whiskey became one of the world's fastest-growing spirits categories through the 2010s, bartenders developed dozens of approachable, fruit-forward cocktails to introduce the spirit to new consumers, and the Irish Orange — requiring no technique beyond a measure and a pour — became one of the most accessible points of entry.
