History & Origin

Leite de Onça — Jaguar's Milk in Portuguese — is a Brazilian cream cocktail whose vivid name combines the jaguar (Panthera onca), the largest cat native to the Americas and a powerful symbol in Brazilian and Pan-American Indigenous cultures, with the incongruity of milk. The jaguar, which ranges across much of South America with its largest remaining populations in the Pantanal wetlands of Mato Grosso do Sul and in the Amazon basin, is associated in Indigenous Amazonian traditions with shamanic power, strength, and transformation. The drink's name implies that its creamy, deceptively gentle appearance conceals the power of the jaguar's milk — a warning that the sweet, chocolate-and-coffee-cream cocktail is stronger than it presents itself. The formula combines cachaça with chocolate liqueur and coffee liqueur, a combination whose flavor logic draws on two of Brazil's most important agricultural exports: cacao, cultivated in Brazil since pre-Colombian Indigenous peoples first domesticated Theobroma cacao in the Amazon basin, and coffee. Brazil has been the world's largest coffee producer since the mid-19th century, currently growing approximately one-third of the world's entire coffee supply, primarily in Minas Gerais, São Paulo, and Espírito Santo. Combining the national spirit with chocolate and coffee produces a cocktail of distinctly Brazilian character — the cachaça's cane-juice freshness cutting through the richness of the two dark flavors.
