History & Origin

The Maple Bourbon Smash applies one of American bartending's oldest and most refreshing format categories to a North American sweetener pairing that feels entirely natural. The Smash was documented by Jerry Thomas in his 1862 Bar-Tenders Guide, established as a category of drinks built on spirit, fresh mint, sugar, and citrus over crushed ice — a looser, more casual relative of the Mint Julep whose defining characteristic is the muddled fresh herb and the volume of crushed ice that keeps the drink intensely cold as it is consumed. The format's reliance on crushed ice meant that the Smash was always a warm-weather drink, and its revival in 21st-century craft cocktail culture maintained that seasonal association. Substituting maple syrup for simple syrup in the Smash framework adds the earthy sweetness of North American maple to bourbon's own barrel character without fundamentally altering the format's refreshing, herb-forward logic. Pure maple syrup is graded by color and flavor intensity — Grade A Light is the most delicate; Grade A Dark is the most intense — and the choice of grade affects the drink's character: a lighter maple allows the mint and citrus to lead, while a darker grade asserts the maple's own caramelized depth. The combination extended the Bourbon Smash's seasonal appeal from summer into autumn, when maple's associations with harvest and changing leaves aligned with both the sweetener and the spirit.
