The Daiquiri takes its name from the village of Daiquirí near Santiago de Cuba in the Oriente province, where American mining engineer Jennings Cox is credited with combining local white rum, fresh lime juice, and sugar around 1898, during the period of American commercial and military presence following the Spanish-American War. Rear Admiral Lucius W. Johnson introduced the recipe to the Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C. in 1909. Ernest Hemingway's association with the Daiquiri became the cocktail's most commercially significant celebrity relationship: Hemingway, who lived at his Finca Vigía outside Havana from 1939 to 1960, was a regular at La Floridita bar in Old Havana, whose head bartender Constantino Ribalaigua Vert prepared his daiquiris without sugar and with double rum — an order the bar immortalized as the Papa Doble or Hemingway Daiquiri. The mini format's reduction of the standard 3-ounce serve to approximately 1.5 ounces in a small coupé or shot glass allows the drink to be consumed entirely before dilution alters its balance.
