History & Origin

The Shirley Temple mocktail was created in the 1930s at Chasen's restaurant in Beverly Hills, California, reportedly designed to give the young actress her own grown-up-seeming drink to enjoy while dining with adults. Shirley Temple was one of the most recognizable faces in America during the 1930s, the top box office draw from 1935 to 1938, and the drink's creation honored her status as a genuine cultural phenomenon. The combination of ginger ale or lemon-lime soda with orange juice and grenadine produced a drink with a striking golden-red color and sweet, fruity flavor that proved universally appealing to children and adults alike. The Shirley Temple's commercial legacy extended into branded grenadine marketed specifically for the drink, and it has remained on American children's menus continuously since the 1930s.
