History & Origin

The Thai Iced Tea Cocktail blends Caribbean rum with one of Southeast Asia's most internationally recognized commercial beverages — Thai iced tea, whose distinctive orange color and sweet, creamy flavor have made it one of the most widely ordered drinks at Thai restaurants worldwide. Traditional Thai iced tea (cha yen in Thai) is prepared from a specific blend of strong-brewed Ceylon or Assam black tea combined with a proprietary Thai tea powder containing spices, orange food coloring (which produces the drink's characteristic vivid orange-red), and sometimes tamarind and star anise. The brewed tea is strained, sweetened with sugar and sometimes condensed milk, and served over ice with evaporated or condensed milk poured over the top to create the layered orange-and-cream presentation. Thai iced tea was developed as a commercial product in Thailand during the mid-20th century and spread internationally through the expansion of Thai restaurants in the United States and Europe from the 1970s onward — the Thai government actively promoted Thai restaurant culture abroad from the early 2000s through its Global Thai initiative, accelerating the cuisine's international reach. The cocktail adaptation combines rum's tropical character with the tea's complex sweetness, adding the spirit's warmth and fermentation aromatics to a flavor already built on aromatic spice.
