📜 History

The Stone Sour is a variation on the classic Sour family of cocktails, distinguished by the addition of orange juice alongside the traditional citrus and sweetener. Cocktail historian David Wondrich has traced the earliest printed reference to an Amaretto Stone Sour to a 1982 newspaper advertisement for the Diamond Supper Club in Menomonie, Wisconsin, where it was featured as the Drink of the Week. The drink was later included among seven Stone Sour variations in Vincent Sardi Jr. and George Shea's 1988 Sardi's Bar Guide, cementing its place in American cocktail culture. The Amaretto Stone Sour emerged during the period when Italian liqueurs, and amaretto in particular, were gaining wide popularity across the United States, offering a lighter and more fruit-forward alternative to the original Amaretto Sour.
