The American Beauty is a pre-Prohibition cocktail whose port wine float and floral name placed it among the more elaborate and visually considered drinks of the Edwardian and early Jazz Age bar. It appeared in Harry Craddock's The Savoy Cocktail Book (1930), the most influential cocktail manual of the inter-war period, published by Craddock during his tenure as head bartender at the Savoy Hotel's American Bar in London. The drink's name references the American Beauty rose, a hybrid tea rose introduced to American cultivation in the late 19th century and prized for its deep crimson blooms and strong fragrance. The rose's particular shade of crimson was widely associated with American romantic aspiration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and naming cocktails after culturally resonant flowers was a common Edwardian practice. The formula — cognac, dry vermouth, grenadine, and orange juice in equal parts — is finished with a float of ruby port poured over the back of a bar spoon, which settles on the surface of the drink and creates the two-layer presentation that justified both the name and the extra preparation step. The port's dark, sweet fruit flavor at the surface is the first thing the drinker tastes, transitioning to the cognac-vermouth body below, creating a drink with a genuine flavor arc from first sip to last.
