The Bahama Mama Jello Shot translates the tropical rum cocktail's coconut, coffee, and pineapple character into the gelatin shooter format that became a staple of American party culture from the 1980s onward. Jello shots — alcohol incorporated into gelatin dessert — have a longer documented history than their party-culture association suggests: Tom Lehrer, the American satirist and mathematician, published a recipe for a gin-and-Jell-O preparation in the early 1950s, and the format has precedents in Victorian gelatin-and-wine desserts. The commercial popularization of the format in American party culture through the 1980s drove widespread adoption across casual bars, college parties, and catered events, with commercially produced gelatin mix (Jell-O, manufactured by Kraft since 1956) providing the accessible, shelf-stable base.
