History & Origin

The Black Tooth Grin was the signature drink of Pantera guitarist Darrell Lance Abbott — known universally as Dimebag Darrell — who mixed it consistently throughout his career and shared it freely with fans and fellow musicians. The formula was characteristically unpretentious: Crown Royal Canadian whisky, Seagram's 7 blended American whisky, and a splash of Coca-Cola, assembled in a large cup and consumed throughout the performance day. Dimebag Darrell was born on August 20, 1966 in Dallas, Texas, and alongside his brother Vinnie Paul formed the backbone of Pantera, the band whose groove metal sound on albums including Vulgar Display of Power (1992) and Far Beyond Driven (1994) made them one of the most commercially successful and sonically influential heavy metal acts of the 1990s. Darrell was shot and killed on stage at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio on December 8, 2004, during a Damageplan concert, a loss that sent shockwaves through the global metal community. The drink's name refers to the distinctive dark staining that heavy whisky consumption can produce on teeth — a dark, tarnished grin — and carries the same irreverent, unsentimental humor that characterized Darrell's public personality. The metal community has maintained the Black Tooth Grin as a tribute drink in the years since his death, ordering it at concerts, in bars, and at Pantera events as a tangible way of honoring his memory and his aesthetic.
