The Blackberry Functional Smash is a modern non-alcoholic cocktail that applies the classic Smash format — muddled fresh fruit, citrus, sweetener, and a spirit or spirit substitute over crushed ice — to functional non-alcoholic spirits, the category of alcohol-free botanical beverages formulated to produce specific wellbeing effects through adaptogenic herbs, nootropic compounds, and botanical extracts. The Smash format was documented by Jerry Thomas in his 1862 Bar-Tenders Guide as a simplified julep: spirit, fresh herb (typically mint), sugar, and citrus over crushed ice, the muddling releasing the herb's volatile aromatic compounds directly into the drink. The category of functional non-alcoholic spirits — products including Kin Euphorics (founded in 2019 in New York by Jen Batchelor, combining adaptogens including rhodiola, GABA, and 5-HTP), Three Spirit (founded in 2018 in the United Kingdom), and Aplós (founded in 2020, using hemp-derived ingredients) — emerged from the broader sober-curious movement of the late 2010s and early 2020s as consumers sought alcohol-free alternatives that offered a functional effect beyond simple juice or soda. Blackberries (Rubus fruticosus) are native to temperate regions of Europe, North America, and Asia and have been gathered from wild hedgerows and cultivated for culinary use since antiquity. Their combination of anthocyanin-derived color, tartaric acid, and aromatic esters makes them one of the most flavorful fruit ingredients for cocktail muddling.
