History & Origin

The Brandy Alexander is a mid-20th century American dessert cocktail combining cognac with dark crème de cacao and heavy cream — one of the most indulgent and recognizable after-dinner drinks of its era. The Alexander family of cocktails traces to an earlier gin-based version documented around 1915, with competing origin stories associating it with Troy Alexander — a bartender at Rector's restaurant in Philadelphia — and with a promotional event at a celebratory dinner in honor of Princess Mary and her betrothal in 1922. The cognac version that became the Brandy Alexander superseded the gin original in popularity through the 1920s and 1930s, its more harmonious combination of grape-distillate brandy with chocolate producing a result that made more intuitive sense than gin's botanical dryness alongside sweet cream and cacao. The drink became a fixture of American supper club and hotel bar menus through the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, its richness and approachability making it a default after-dinner order for diners unfamiliar with cognac's range. The combination of cognac's stone-fruit character, the dark crème de cacao's chocolate and vanilla (produced from the cacao bean's natural flavor compounds), and cream's fat-derived sweetness produces a drink that functions genuinely as both cocktail and dessert. A freshly grated nutmeg garnish — the traditional finishing touch documented in both the Savoy Cocktail Book and American supper club menus — adds aromatic warmth.
