History & Origin

Dark and Stormy Punch scales Bermuda's legally protected national cocktail into the communal punch format suited to the sailing regattas, maritime events, and island-themed celebrations where the Dark 'n' Stormy is most at home. The original Dark 'n' Stormy is defined by Gosling Brothers' trademark as a combination of Goslings Black Seal rum and ginger beer — the Bermuda rum-and-ginger tradition that evolved through the British Royal Navy's presence on the island and the sailing community's adoption of the combination as their signature drink. Goslings Black Seal rum is a blend of Barbadian, Trinidadian, and Jamaican rums — each contributing different flavor characteristics — blended and bottled by Gosling Brothers in Bermuda since the early 20th century. The Black Seal name reportedly came from the black sealing wax used to close the bottles when paper labels were unavailable during World War II. The punch format aggregates the drink's two essential components — dark rum and ginger beer — alongside fresh lime juice and ice in a large vessel, eliminating the individual-glass floating presentation of the single-serve version but preserving the spicy-dark-citrus flavor that makes the original so recognizable. The punch is particularly associated with the Newport Bermuda Race, the offshore sailing event that has been held roughly biennially since 1906.
