History & Origin

The Dublin Sling applies the Singapore Sling's template — spirit, citrus, cherry liqueur, soda water, and Bénédictine in some versions — to Irish whiskey, swapping the tropical gin-based original's colonial-era identity for an Irish urban one. The Singapore Sling was created around 1915 by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon at the Long Bar of the Raffles Hotel in Singapore — the hotel founded by the Armenian Sarkies brothers in 1887 and named for Sir Stamford Raffles. Dublin's own whiskey identity is centered on a cluster of working distilleries that have made the Irish capital the world's most concentrated city for whiskey tourism: Jameson's original Bow Street Distillery in the Smithfield neighborhood (now a visitor experience), the Teeling Distillery which opened in 2015 as the first new distillery in Dublin city in over 125 years, and the Pearse Lyons Distillery which opened in 2017 in a repurposed 12th-century St. James's Church in the Liberties neighborhood, steps from the former Power's John's Lane Distillery. Dublin's historic role as the commercial center of Ireland's 19th-century whiskey industry, which at its peak made Irish whiskey the most consumed whiskey style in the world, gives the Dublin Sling format genuine geographic resonance.
