The Fernandito belongs to one of the most improbable flavor success stories in cocktail history. Fernet-Branca was formulated in Milan in 1845 by a self-taught herbalist named Bernardino Branca, who originally marketed it as a medicinal cure for cholera, fever, and digestive complaints. Fratelli Branca began exporting to Argentina in 1907 and established a distillery in Buenos Aires in 1925, bringing the bitter, mentholated liqueur to a country with deep Italian immigrant roots. For most of the 20th century Argentines drank Fernet as a digestif. The transformation came in Córdoba during the 1980s, in the years following Argentina's return to democracy, when a generation of university students began mixing it with Coca-Cola. The sweetness of the cola softened Fernet's herbal intensity while the carbonation lifted it, creating a combination that was simultaneously refreshing and complex enough to drink all evening. The formula spread from Córdoba nationwide, and by the early 2000s Argentina was consuming more than 75 percent of all fernet produced worldwide. The International Bartenders Association added the Fernandito to its official list in 2020, formally recognizing the cultural significance of what had begun as an improvised student drink. Fratelli Branca's own recommended ratio is 1 part Fernet to 3 parts cola.
