The recipe is credited to a bar in El Adobe in Orange, California, which allegedly created it in 1952 for a young couple who arrived in a new gold Cadillac — though this origin story is difficult to verify with documentary evidence. The cocktail became a fixture of American supper club and hotel bar menus through the 1960s and 1970s, when Galliano was at the height of its American commercial presence following the Harvey Wallbanger's success. Galliano was created in 1896 by Arturo Vaccari in Livorno, Italy — a moderately sweet, pale golden liqueur made from herbs, spices, and botanicals including anise, vanilla, juniper, musk yarrow, and star anise, with its characteristic tall, tapering bottle making it visually distinctive behind every bar that stocked it.
