The Hot Sex Shot exploits a naming convention that American bar culture deployed systematically from the 1980s onward: give a sweet, approachable, non-threatening drink a provocative name and the act of ordering becomes itself a social event. The drink is a warm amaretto and Irish cream combination, served slightly heated — most commonly microwaved for a few seconds — which transforms the room-temperature cream shot into something closer to a warm dessert liqueur. Amaretto's flavor profile, built on benzaldehyde derived from apricot kernel oil in Disaronno's formulation or from actual almonds and almond cookies in other producers' versions, produces a characteristic marzipan-and-dried-fruit sweetness that becomes even more dessert-forward when warmed, as heat amplifies aromatic compounds and reduces the perception of alcohol's sharpness. Baileys Irish Cream, introduced in 1974 as the first commercially produced Irish cream liqueur, provides the dairy component — a fresh cream and Irish whiskey emulsion that remains stable at low-level warming temperatures but will break apart if overheated. The combination of sweet almond warmth and cream is entirely palatable regardless of the name that introduces it, and the warm serving temperature distinguishes it from the majority of Irish cream shots, which are served cold.
