The Kerry Cooler takes its name from County Kerry — Ireland's most visually dramatic county, situated in the country's southwestern corner where the Atlantic Ocean meets the mountain ranges of the Iveragh, Dingle, and Beara Peninsulas. Kerry's coastal landscape, which includes the Ring of Kerry driving route that traces the Iveragh Peninsula's perimeter through mountains, lakes, and cliff-top views, has been among the most visited tourist destinations in Ireland since the Victorian period, when the Great Southern Railway opened access to Killarney and the surrounding lakes in 1853. Killarney National Park — established in 1932 as Ireland's first national park — encompasses three lakes and the Macgillycuddy's Reeks mountain range including Carrauntoohil, at 1,038 meters the highest peak in Ireland. The Kerry farmland also produces significant agricultural output including Kerry cattle, the oldest surviving breed of dairy cattle in Europe. Irish whiskey tourism grew significantly through the 2010s as the category's commercial expansion coincided with increased international interest in craft spirits provenance: distillery visits became a major component of Irish tourism, and the development of new distilleries including Dingle (County Kerry) and Killarney-area operations gave the county a specific whiskey identity to complement its landscape reputation.
