Mulled Gin is a modern adaptation of one of the oldest European hot drink traditions — the practice of heating wine with spices and sweetener that the Romans spread across their empire and that survived into contemporary culture as Glühwein, gløgg, vin chaud, and wassail. The application of the mulling formula to gin rather than wine is a 21st-century development that emerged from two simultaneous trends: the explosion of craft gin production in the United Kingdom from roughly 2008 onward, which produced hundreds of new botanically complex distilleries offering expressions with unusual herbal, floral, and spice profiles suited to warming preparations; and the British cocktail culture's sustained interest in seasonal, temperature-variable drinks for the winter months. Gin's botanical character translates naturally to the mulled format: the juniper, coriander, citrus peel, and warming spice botanicals typical of London Dry gin share aromatic register with cinnamon, cloves, star anise, and orange peel — the classic mulling spices — creating a heated drink whose components reinforce rather than compete with each other. The mulled format also addresses gin's alcohol delivery in cold weather: heating concentrates the aromatics and provides genuine physical warmth, making gin as credible a winter spirit as the whiskeys and brandies that typically anchor hot toddy preparations.
