History & Origin

The NA Whiskey Smash applies a 19th-century American classic to non-alcoholic whiskey, adapting a format that predates the Mint Julep's association with any single spirit. The Smash was documented by Jerry Thomas in his 1862 Bar-Tenders Guide as a condensed Julep: spirit, fresh mint, sugar, and citrus over crushed ice in a short glass. The format's fresh-herb muddling and crushed-ice presentation make it one of the most sensory-rich cocktail experiences, with the mint's volatile aromatics, the citrus's acid, and the crushed ice's rapid cooling combining to create a drink whose pleasure is as much tactile and olfactory as it is gustatory. Non-alcoholic whiskey substitutes including Ritual Zero Proof American Whiskey Alternative, Spiritless Kentucky 74 (specifically formulated to approximate Kentucky bourbon's caramel and vanilla barrel notes through a proprietary process using water and natural flavorings), and Free Spirits' The Spirit of Bourbon each provide a grain-sweet base that functions in the Smash framework. The fresh lemon and mint elements are entirely unchanged from the alcoholic version, and their contribution is sufficiently dominant that the non-alcoholic base's limitations are less apparent in the Smash than in a spirit-forward stirred cocktail. The NA Whiskey Smash became a summer entertaining staple in sober-curious households.
