History & Origin

The Orange Blossom is a Prohibition-era gin cocktail that became one of the most consumed American cocktails of the 1920s, its simple formula of gin and orange juice serving a very practical purpose: fresh orange juice's sweetness and acidity effectively masked the harsh, fusel-oil-laden quality of the illicitly produced grain spirit that circulated in American bars after the 18th Amendment took effect in January 1920. The speakeasy era's most commercially successful cocktails were almost all citrus-forward preparations — the Bee's Knees, the Sidecar, the Southside — because the acid and sweetness of fresh fruit juice was the most effective available tool for making low-quality spirit palatable. Orange juice was particularly suited to this role: widely available, affordable, naturally sweet, and possessing an aroma strong enough to compete with raw spirit's off-notes. The Orange Blossom's name references the fragrance of Citrus sinensis flowers — the white blossoms of the sweet orange tree — which have been associated with purity, new beginnings, and bridal celebrations in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern traditions since at least the 12th century. Spanish brides have traditionally worn orange blossoms in their hair, and the flowers' scent was incorporated into perfumes and confections across the Islamic world before entering European culture through Moorish Spain. The association added a romantic elegance to an otherwise purely functional cocktail.
