This julep represents the original pre-Civil War Southern style, when French cognac flowed more freely than bourbon in many American ports. The medicinal-sounding name reflects an era when juleps were considered therapeutic—prescribed for various ailments. New Orleans bartender Chris McMillian championed the revival of this historic recipe, demonstrating its preparation at Tales of the Cocktail and helping restore cognac-based juleps to contemporary bar menus.
