History & Origin

The Roy Rogers mocktail is the cola-based counterpart to the Shirley Temple — the grenadine-spiked mocktail named after child actress Shirley Temple in the 1930s — named after Roy Rogers, the singing cowboy actor and cultural hero of American Western films and television throughout the 1940s and 1950s. Rogers, born Leonard Franklin Slye in 1911, was one of the most popular Western stars in Hollywood history, known as the King of Cowboys. His wholesome, family-friendly image made him an appropriate namesake for a children's mocktail alongside Shirley Temple. The Roy Rogers combines cola with grenadine rather than the Temple's ginger ale or lemon-lime soda base, giving it a distinctly different flavor profile while sharing the same festive red color and the same appeal to younger drinkers at adult events.
