The Scooby Snack Shot is a tropical novelty shooter named for the cartoon Saint Bernard-like Great Dane from the Hanna-Barbera animated television series Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, which premiered on CBS on September 13, 1969 and became one of the longest-running animated franchise in television history. The show's signature treat — the Scooby Snack, a dog biscuit used to motivate Scooby and Shaggy into accepting dangerous tasks — lent its name to a shot whose combination of coconut rum, Midori melon liqueur, pineapple juice, and whipped cream produces a sweet, cartoonishly approachable flavor profile that evokes the childlike innocence of the name even as it delivers a genuine alcoholic punch. Midori, the Japanese muskmelon liqueur produced by Suntory and launched in the United States at a party at Studio 54 in June 1978, provides both the shot's vivid green color and its melon sweetness. Malibu coconut rum — launched by the Malibu Beach Inc. company in Barbados around 1980 — adds tropical sweetness and the coconut aromatic that makes the shot feel South Pacific in character. The whipped cream garnish transforms the shot from a liquid preparation into something that must be consumed in one gesture, the cream adding both theatrical presentation and a dairy softness that rounds the combination.
