The Scorpion Bowl is the most theatrical expression of tiki culture's communal drinking tradition — a large ceramic vessel filled with a multi-spirit rum punch, served with multiple long straws for simultaneous group consumption at a single table. American tiki culture was founded in the 1930s by Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt (Donn Beach, Don the Beachcomber) and Victor Jules Bergeron Jr. (Trader Vic), both of whom developed the communal bowl as a centerpiece of their restaurant experience. Trader Vic's Scorpion cocktail, developed at his Oakland restaurant, was among the most celebrated of these large-format drinks, combining rum, brandy, fresh citrus, and orgeat — the almond-and-orange-blossom syrup that was one of tiki's defining flavor components — in a preparation designed to be consumed by multiple people from a single dramatic vessel. The ceramic vessels themselves — molded into tropical, Polynesian, or oceanic shapes — were part of the tiki restaurant's broader commitment to immersive environmental design, where the glassware, décor, music, and food created a complete escapist fantasy unrelated to the actual Pacific cultures whose aesthetics were borrowed. The Scorpion Bowl's communal consumption ritual created social engagement around the drinking act itself, and it remains a fixture of surviving tiki bars worldwide.
