History & Origin

The Scotch Espresso Martini substitutes Scotch whisky for the vodka in Dick Bradsell's landmark creation — the Espresso Martini developed at the Soho Brasserie in London in the mid-1980s, not the sometimes-cited 1983 date, when Bradsell combined vodka, fresh espresso, coffee liqueur, and sugar syrup in response to a customer's request for something to simultaneously wake and intoxicate her. The Scotch substitution produces a fundamentally different drink: where vodka's neutrality allows the espresso's roasted bitterness to completely dominate the flavor, Scotch's grain character, barrel-derived vanilla, and sometimes smoky peat create a second aromatic layer that engages with coffee in a more complex way. The combination of Scotch and espresso shares common aromatic ground: both carry Maillard reaction products from roasting or toasting processes — barley in Scotch's kilning, coffee beans in espresso's roasting — and these related compounds produce mutual amplification rather than competition. The Scotch Espresso Martini gained commercial traction through the early 2020s as the original Espresso Martini experienced a global revival driven by social media, and bartenders systematically explored spirit substitutions in the format.
