The Snake Bite Shot is an American bar shooter combining whiskey with peppermint schnapps — a pairing whose simultaneous warming (from the whiskey's alcohol) and cooling (from the peppermint's menthol activating the TRPM8 cold receptor) sensory effects produced the shooting pain-metaphor name. Peppermint (Mentha × piperita), the hybrid of watermint and spearmint that is the world's most commercially cultivated mint species, contains the compound menthol whose cold-receptor activation produces an intense cooling sensation that is simultaneously perceived as cold (through the receptor's triggering) and burning (through the high concentration of mint oil compounds at the mucous membranes). When combined with whiskey's own alcohol warmth, the two opposite thermal sensations create the bite of the name. The Snake Bite Shot anticipates the commercial logic that Fireball Cinnamon Whisky would later exploit at mass scale: the pairing of a warming spirit with an intense flavor-sensation modifier produces a shot whose sensory intensity exceeds the sum of its components and creates a memorable, repeatable experience.
