The SoCo Lime shot builds on one of the most distinctive spirits in the American portfolio: Southern Comfort, created by New Orleans bartender M.W. Heron in 1874 under the original name Cuffs and Buttons — a name referencing the formal dress worn at New Orleans social events — and commercially sold under the Southern Comfort name beginning in 1875. Heron developed the product to make rough frontier whiskey more palatable by infusing it with peaches, fruit, and spices; the result was a liqueur-adjacent spirit with a warmth and sweetness that departed fundamentally from the unmodified whiskey it contained. The brand changed hands multiple times over the following century, moving through the Fowler family in Memphis and eventually to Brown-Forman, which sold it to Sazerac in 2016. Southern Comfort's flavor profile — sweet peach and fruit upfront, with the warmth of whiskey underneath — makes it unusually compatible with citrus, and the SoCo Lime shot exploits this directly: the lime's sharp acid cuts through the sweetness in the same way that lime balances agave sweetness in a Margarita, creating a shot with genuine balance between its two opposing elements. The ritual addition of a fresh lime wedge, squeezed and sometimes chased immediately after the shot, amplifies this acid contrast.
