History & Origin

Virgin Michelada removes the beer from the Mexican beer cocktail — the combination of light Mexican lager with lime juice, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and often tomato juice that became a beloved bar and beach staple throughout Mexico — while maintaining the savory, spicy, tomato-citrus profile that makes the drink so refreshing. The Michelada's origins are contested, with several Mexican cities claiming invention: some attribute it to the Club Deportivo Potosino in San Luis Potosí, where Michel Esper purportedly created it in the 1960s by squeezing lime into his cerveza. Others trace it to Veracruz beach culture. The Virgin version substitutes sparkling water or a light non-alcoholic beer for the lager while maintaining the full savory garnish — tajin rim, lime, hot sauce, Worcestershire — creating a Bloody Mary-adjacent mocktail.
