History & Origin

The Arnold Palmer is a half-iced-tea, half-lemonade combination named after the legendary professional golfer Arnold Palmer (1929-2016), who was so associated with the drink that he ordered it by name throughout his career and it eventually became commercially bottled by Arizona Beverages. Palmer reportedly began requesting the combination at a restaurant in the 1960s, overheard by a woman at an adjacent table who ordered "an Arnold Palmer" herself — demonstrating how quickly the celebrity association propagated. The combination of sweet tea and lemonade has older, unnamed roots in American summer drink culture, but Palmer's endorsement created a named cocktail tradition. The IBA recognized it as a non-alcoholic classic. The alcoholic version — iced tea with lemonade and a splash of vodka — is called a John Daly, named for another pro golfer.
