History & Origin

The Artist's Special is a pre-Prohibition Scotch whisky cocktail combining Scotch, dry French vermouth, grenadine, and fresh lemon juice in a sour-adjacent formula that appeared in multiple early 20th-century American bartending guides. The drink reflects the Edwardian and early Jazz Age bar culture's enthusiasm for whisky-vermouth combinations: where the Manhattan template applied to American rye or bourbon with sweet Italian vermouth, the parallel tradition in Scotch cocktails used the lighter, drier French vermouth as a more compatible partner for Scotch's grain and peat character. The addition of grenadine and lemon juice transforms the spirit-vermouth base into something closer to a sour, the pomegranate sweetness of the grenadine and the citric acid of the lemon juice providing the color and acidity that the standard Manhattan family's bitters-only preparation does not include. The name Artist's Special belongs to a category of evocative, aspirational cocktail names fashionable in the cocktail culture of the 1890s through the 1920s — The Journalist, The Writer, The Poet, The Actor — that positioned their drinks as belonging to a world of creative sophistication and bohemian glamour.
