The B-55 is part of the aviation-themed B-52 family of layered shooters, which became one of the most recognized genres of bar shots during the 1980s. The original B-52 — reportedly created at Alice's Restaurant in Banff, Alberta, Canada in the late 1970s and named after the American B-52 Stratofortress bomber — established the template of layered coffee liqueur, Irish cream, and orange liqueur. The family expanded to include variations bearing sequential designations. The B-55 typically incorporates rum — either dark or overproof — as an additional or substitute layer, and is often prepared as a flaming shot with the high-proof spirit ignited briefly before serving. The theatrical element of the flaming shot made the B-52 family a staple of high-energy bars and nightclubs throughout the 1980s and 1990s, when the visual drama of flaming drinks was at peak popularity.
