- 2 ozscotch whisky(100 proof or higher)
- 2 ozboiling water
- 1 barspoonhoney
- lemon twistgarnish
- 1Heat two silver-plated mugs by filling with hot water then empty
- 2Pour hot water into one mug and Scotch into the other
- 3Ignite the Scotch and pour back and forth between mugs
- 4After 4-5 passes pour into serving mug and add honey
- 5Garnish with a lemon twist

The Blue Blazer is the most theatrical cocktail in American bar history and the signature creation of Jerry Thomas, widely regarded as the father of American mixology. Thomas created it at the El Dorado gambling saloon in San Francisco in the 1850s, pouring ignited Scotch whisky between two metal mugs to create a spectacular arc of blue flame. He later documented it in his landmark 1862 book How to Mix Drinks — the first bartending guide ever published in the United States. Drinks historian David Wondrich notes that flair bartending was already declining in popularity by the 1880s, but the Blue Blazer endured as a symbol of theatrical mixology. The 21st-century craft cocktail revival has brought it back, particularly in barrel-proof Scotch programs where high proof sustains the flame. As Thomas himself warned: 'If well done, this will have the appearance of a continued stream of liquid fire.'
