History & Origin

The Bourbon Renewal was created by bartender Jeffrey Morgenthaler in 2001 while working at Bel Ami Lounge in Eugene, Oregon. Morgenthaler named the drink after a band his business partner Tony Figoli had been in years earlier, saying he thought the name was absolutely brilliant. The cocktail is essentially a bourbon sour elevated with creme de cassis, the French blackcurrant liqueur, which adds a juicy berry depth and a striking purple tint. Morgenthaler later brought the drink to Portland's Clyde Common, where it became one of the bar's most popular offerings and helped establish him as a leading figure in the modern cocktail renaissance. The Bourbon Renewal is often compared to Dick Bradsell's Bramble and the New York Sour, sitting in the category of spirit-forward sours brightened by berry liqueur.
