History & Origin

The Brave Bull is a two-ingredient after-dinner cocktail combining tequila with Kahlúa — the coffee liqueur created in Mexico in 1936 that became one of the most commercially recognized liqueur brands in the world through the second half of the 20th century. Kahlúa was developed in the Veracruz region of Mexico using the arabica coffee cultivated in that state's highland coffee-growing zones, combined with sugar cane spirit and vanilla. The brand was acquired and commercially developed through successive ownership changes, with Pedro Domecq holding distribution rights through a significant period of its commercial growth before the brand passed to Allied Domecq and ultimately to Pernod Ricard, which acquired it in 2005. The Brave Bull positions tequila and Kahlúa as complementary spirits rather than competing flavors: tequila's agave earthiness and the light smoke of some expressions creates a savory counterpoint to Kahlúa's sweet, roasted coffee and vanilla character, and the combination over ice produces a drink whose flavor registers shift between the coffee's sweetness and the agave's dryness. The name's bravado reference — the bull being a symbol of Mexican strength and festivity — aligns the drink with the masculine adventure associations that surrounded tequila in American bar culture through the 1970s and 1980s.
