The Classic Vodka Jello Shot represents the original, foundational version of the party food staple that Tom Lehrer reportedly developed in the 1950s and that became an American party culture fixture through the 1980s. The simplest version combines plain or flavored Jell-O gelatin with vodka substituted for some of the cold water called for in the standard gelatin preparation, resulting in a firm, portable, single-serving alcoholic gelatin. Vodka became the default spirit for jello shots because its neutral flavor interferes least with the fruit flavors of the gelatin and because it mixes cleanly with the gelatin matrix without affecting the set. The classic format — brightly colored, fruit-flavored, slightly wobbly — established the template that all subsequent jello shot variations built upon.
