History & Origin

The Illusion shot emerged from the Midori craze that swept international bar culture following the liqueur's spectacular American debut. Suntory, Japan's first domestic whisky producer — founded by Shinjiro Torii with the Yamazaki distillery in 1923 — developed Midori as a honeydew melon-flavored liqueur and launched it in the United States with one of the most lavish spirit promotion events in history: a party at Studio 54 in New York City in June 1978, attended by John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Bianca Jagger, and other celebrities of the era. Midori is the Japanese word for green, and the liqueur's vivid, almost neon green color made it immediately distinctive on any bar shelf. It spread rapidly through American, Australian, and European bar culture through the late 1970s and 1980s, appearing in everything from shots to long drinks to frozen cocktails. Australia in particular developed an enduring relationship with Midori, incorporating it into a range of shooters and party drinks that became fixtures of the country's hotel bar culture. The Illusion typically combines Midori with vodka, coconut rum, pineapple juice, and a citrus component — the Midori's honeydew sweetness supported by the pineapple's acid and the coconut's tropical depth. The resulting drink is characteristically bright green, sweet, and tropical, the visual impact justifying its name: it looks too colorful and sweet to be as strong as it is.
