History & Origin

The Gypsy Queen pairs vodka's studied neutrality with one of the most complex and historically storied liqueurs in the world: Bénédictine D.O.M., produced in Fécamp in the Normandy region of France. The Bénédictine distillery was established by wine merchant Alexandre Le Grand in 1863, who claimed he had rediscovered a formula created by Benedictine monk Dom Bernardo Vincelli at the Abbey of Fécamp in 1510. While historians regard the 16th-century origin story as a marketing legend rather than documented history, the liqueur itself is entirely real and genuinely complex: it is made from a blend of twenty-seven herbs and spices including angelica, hyssop, lemon balm, juniper, and saffron, aged in oak barrels, and produces a flavor that is simultaneously sweet, warm, citrusy, and herbal. The initials D.O.M. on the bottle stand for Deo Optimo Maximo — To God, Most Good, Most Great — which Le Grand incorporated as a tribute to the monks whose supposed recipe inspired his product. The Gypsy Queen emerged from the mid-20th century vodka boom, when bartenders discovered that vodka's absence of dominant flavor made it an exceptional carrier for liqueurs with strong, complex personalities. Where gin's juniper might compete with Bénédictine, or rum's molasses create an imbalanced sweetness, vodka provides clean structure that allows the liqueur to express itself fully, with Angostura bitters adding the bitter backbone that keeps the sweetness in check.
