History & Origin

Crodino is Italy's most consumed non-alcoholic aperitivo, first bottled in the small Piedmontese town of Crodo — tucked into the Ossola Valley near the Swiss border in the northwestern corner of the country — in 1964. The drink takes its name directly from that village, whose mineral springs had long supported a local bottling industry. The recipe is a proprietary blend of botanical extracts, herbs, citrus, and quinine, sweetened with sugar and carbonated; the botanicals are steeped in the base for up to six months before the resulting liquid is filtered and bottled. The characteristic rust-orange color, bittersweet flavor, and effervescence were designed to mirror the sensory experience of alcoholic aperitivi like Campari and Aperol, giving non-drinkers a genuine aperitivo alternative rather than a soft drink. Campari Group acquired Crodino in 1995, integrating it into the same portfolio as Campari, Aperol, and Cynar. The tradition it serves is the Italian aperitivo hour — the ritual gathering before dinner, typically between 6 and 9 p.m., where drinks are accompanied by small bites of food and conversation flows before the evening meal. Crodino is typically served in a small bottle poured over ice with a slice of orange in a wine glass, mirroring exactly the presentation of an Aperol or Campari and soda. In Italy it has become the default choice for pregnant women, designated drivers, and anyone observing any period of abstinence who still wants to participate fully in the aperitivo ritual.
