Daniel Webster Punch honors one of the most dominant political figures in 19th-century American public life. Daniel Webster was born in Salisbury, New Hampshire in 1782 and built a career that spanned five decades of American history — serving as a U.S. Representative from New Hampshire, U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, and Secretary of State under three presidents (William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Millard Fillmore). Webster was considered one of the greatest orators in American history; his reply to Senator Robert Hayne in 1830, asserting the sovereignty of the federal union over state nullification, was reprinted, memorized, and recited by schoolchildren across the country for generations. He was also celebrated — and gently satirized — for his equally formidable appetite at table, which included a documented fondness for Madeira wine, punch, and the elaborate hospitality traditions of antebellum Washington. The punch named in his honor reflects the aristocratic punch culture of the era: Madeira or sherry as the fortified wine base, champagne for effervescence, fresh citrus, brandy, and sugar in a large communal bowl appropriate for the dinner parties and political entertaining that Webster conducted at his estates in Massachusetts and in Washington. The format connects the drink directly to the punch bowl tradition that was the centerpiece of American social entertaining from the colonial period through the Civil War.
