The Dublin Iced Tea is an Irish-themed variation on the Long Island Iced Tea — one of the most widely ordered multi-spirit cocktails in American bar history. The Long Island Iced Tea was created around 1972 by Robert Butt, a bartender in Long Island, New York, who combined equal parts vodka, rum, gin, tequila, and triple sec with sour mix and a cola float, producing a drink whose amber color resembles iced tea despite containing no tea. The formula became a commercial phenomenon because it delivered maximum alcohol in a single, deceptively approachable glass. The Dublin variation adapts this formula for Irish whiskey, substituting Jameson or another Irish expression for one of the spirit components and sometimes adding Midori or green food coloring for a St. Patrick's Day green-hued presentation. Jameson Irish Whiskey, produced at the Midleton Distillery in County Cork by Irish Distillers Limited — a subsidiary of Pernod Ricard since 1988 — is the world's best-selling Irish whiskey by volume, its triple-distilled, blended character making it the default brand reference for Irish whiskey in American cocktail contexts. The Dublin format's commercial purpose is straightforward: it attaches a familiar high-volume cocktail format to Irish whiskey's cultural associations, making it a natural St. Patrick's Day order in American bars.
