The Duck Fart shot is a layered shooter whose origin is traced to Anchorage, Alaska, in the late 1980s — a provenance that has been repeated consistently enough across bar industry sources to be the accepted account, even if a precise establishment and date remain elusive. The drink layers Kahlúa at the bottom, Baileys Irish Cream in the middle, and Crown Royal Canadian whisky on top, the different densities of the three liquids maintaining visual separation when poured carefully over the back of a spoon. Kahlúa, the Mexican coffee liqueur produced in Veracruz from 1936, is the densest and settles to the base; Baileys, introduced in Ireland in 1974 by Gilbeys of Ireland as the world's first commercially produced Irish cream liqueur, sits above it; Crown Royal, blended in Gimli, Manitoba and first created in 1939 to honor a visit by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Canada — the first visit by a reigning British monarch — floats on top. The combination produces a drink that moves from coffee sweetness through creamy dairy richness to the clean, smooth warmth of the Canadian blend as it is consumed. The Duck Fart became particularly associated with Alaska's bar culture and has been cited as a specialty of several Alaskan establishments including bars in Juneau. Its name belongs to the tradition of deliberately inelegant shot naming that emerged in 1980s American bar culture, where the contrast between an unappetizing name and a genuinely pleasant flavor was itself part of the entertainment.
