History & Origin

Fish House Vodka Punch is a modern adaptation of America's oldest documented punch recipe, reimagined with vodka as the base spirit in place of the original's combination of Jamaican rum, cognac, and peach brandy. The original Fish House Punch was created in 1732 by members of the State in Schuylkill, a fishing and social club founded that year on the banks of the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia by twenty-eight followers of William Penn. The club's clubhouse, which they called the Castle, served as the setting for regular communal feasts and punch ceremonies, and the punch they developed — rum, cognac, peach brandy, lemon juice, and sugar — has been made essentially unchanged for nearly three centuries. George Washington attended dinners at the State in Schuylkill on multiple occasions alongside the Marquis de Lafayette, and the story of his three-day diary gap following a Fish House dinner has become one of American drinking culture's most repeated anecdotes. Cocktail historian David Wondrich described it as the most famous punch in American history. The vodka adaptation substitutes the three original spirits with a single neutral base, producing a lighter, more accessible version that maintains the punch's fundamental architecture of spirit, citrus, and sugar in a large-format communal bowl. The peach element — whether peach brandy, peach schnapps, or fresh peach — is typically retained in modern adaptations as the flavor most closely associated with the original's character, and the lemon juice and sugar remain constant.
