Instructions
  1. 1Chill a coupe or Nick & Nora glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes.
  2. 2Add the gin, Lillet Blanc, elderflower liqueur, fresh grapefruit juice, and lemon bitters to a cocktail shaker.
  3. 3Fill the shaker halfway with ice and shake vigorously for 20 to 30 seconds until the outside of the shaker is very cold.
  4. 4Double strain through your cocktail strainer and a fine mesh strainer into the chilled glass. This removes ice chips and pulp for a smooth, elegant texture.
  5. 5Express a lemon twist over the surface of the drink to release its oils, then use it as a garnish on the rim.

History & Origin

The French Blonde was created in 2011 by food writer Caraline Bianchetto Chase and published in Saveur magazine. Built on five ingredients — London dry gin, Lillet Blanc, elderflower liqueur, fresh grapefruit juice, and lemon bitters — the recipe was designed as an elegant, aromatic cocktail showcasing Lillet Blanc, a French aromatized wine from Bordeaux made from a blend of white wine and macerated citrus fruit liqueurs. The drink spent over a decade in relative obscurity, popular among cocktail enthusiasts but largely unknown to casual drinkers. That changed in 2024 when the French Blonde went viral after a well-known pop star was photographed ordering it at a restaurant in Kansas. Within weeks the cocktail appeared on menus across the country and generated millions of social media posts. The appeal of the French Blonde lies in its balance: the gentle bitterness and citrus sweetness of Lillet Blanc, the floral honeyed character of elderflower liqueur, the tartness of fresh grapefruit juice, and the botanical edge of a London dry gin all work together without any single ingredient dominating. Lemon bitters add a final layer of precision, sharpening the citrus notes and binding the components. The drink is served up — shaken hard and double-strained — in a coupe or Nick and Nora glass. It has become one of the defining cocktails of the mid-2020s.
