History & Origin

The Frozen Spicy Piña Colada is a modern variation that adds chili heat to Puerto Rico's national drink, applying the tropical-spicy pairing that became one of the defining American craft cocktail trends of the 2010s to the most consumed frozen rum cocktail in the world. The Piña Colada was created on August 15, 1954 by Ramón Marrero Pérez, known as Monchito, at the Caribe Hilton hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico, after three months of experimentation to develop a drink that captured the island's tropical character. Puerto Rico's legislature designated the Piña Colada the official national drink in 1978. The original formula — white rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice — was blended with ice at the Caribe Hilton using the Coco López coconut cream product introduced by Ramón López Irizarry of the University of Puerto Rico Agricultural Experiment Station in 1954, the same year as the cocktail's creation. The spicy variation adds jalapeño-infused rum, jalapeño syrup, or muddled fresh jalapeño to the blended base, the capsaicin's TRPV1 receptor activation creating a warming sensation that contrasts with the frozen drink's temperature and the coconut cream's fat-derived smoothness.
