History & Origin

The Garden Tonic is a contemporary non-alcoholic cocktail that takes inspiration from the botanical heritage of tonic water itself. Tonic water was originally created in British India in the 19th century as a delivery mechanism for quinine — the antimalarial compound extracted from the bark of the South American cinchona tree — which was mixed with water, sugar, and citrus to make its bitter taste more palatable for British soldiers and colonists. The botanically complex tonic waters that emerged from craft producers like Fever-Tree (2005), East Imperial, and Q Tonic in the 2000s and 2010s reintroduced the complexity of fresh aromatics — citrus peel, lemon, quinine bark — to premium mixers. The Garden Tonic combines premium tonic with fresh garden herbs such as thyme, rosemary, and cucumber to create a botanical non-alcoholic aperitif.
