History & Origin

The Ginger Beer Mule is the alcohol-free version of the Moscow Mule — created in Hollywood in 1941 when John G. Martin and Jack Morgan combined Smirnoff vodka with Morgan's house-made ginger beer in copper mugs — that strips the recipe to its most essential and genuinely flavorful element: ginger beer. The Moscow Mule's success was primarily a vodka marketing exercise, but the copper mug tradition and the ginger beer's sharp, spicy character proved compelling enough to stand alone without the spirit. Craft ginger beer, made with significant quantities of actual fresh ginger root rather than the minimal ginger extract in commercial products, provides genuine heat and complexity. The Ginger Beer Mule served in a copper mug with fresh lime juice and mint is a satisfying non-alcoholic option that doesn't feel like a compromise.
